Assume v. Presume

But the Cumbrian elders do say deed. ;)
 
But there is no alternative spelling for "island". I can understand there might have been variations in what different people (possibly by regional dialect) call what I call a hiccup, one of which might have been "hiccough", but I see no reason to say "hiccup" and write "hiccough" when there is a documented spelling "hiccup".
 
Didn't hiccup only become an accepted alternative after a period of the mis-spelling of hiccough by the ignorant?
